In October 1963, my local record stores didn’t stock and wouldn’t order Beatles’ records but, for Halloween, there was a costume contest that promised “the prize of your choice.” Dressed as a “madman” (not much of a stretch), I won. My modest request was a copy of She Loves You, that had been released in the UK in late August. Nobody had ever heard of The Beatles and the record was unobtainable—I never got my well-deserved prize.
