Category: 09.29 Chapter Twenty-Nine (2000-04) A Tale of Two Franchises: X-Men and Middle-earth Collide
I returned to Los Angeles from New Zealand in mid-May, 2000. X-Men was scheduled for release on July 14 and there was a lot of work I had to do on it before then. So did Ian McKellen. He came to L.A. to shoot “pick-ups,” additional scenes to be inserted into the final film. These were mostly on the Statue of Liberty set that had been transported to a small soundstage in Culver City.
As soon as he was finished, he had to rush to the (fortunately nearby) airport to catch a flight back to NZ. I went with him to try to capture some audio content for the website. I asked him to recite the lines that begin with, “One ring to rule them all.” I figured we’d have a nice echo inside the public restroom. The first take was ruined when someone flushed a toilet, but after two or three takes I had what I wanted.
